INFORMATION ABOUT KIDONGO BEACH MANAGEMENT UNIT
KIDONGO BEACH MANAGEMENT UNIT
The project was started by the locals in 2006 and was registered the same. Armed with knowledge that they can benefit from thisi eco-tourism project, over 100 locals led by their chairman Kokota Chivatsi have been flocking the Kidongo shoreline every day. Here the locals have teamed up to construct fish ponds and also planting mangorove as a way of protecting the environment. They have been doing this for years voluntarily and are now asking for funding to complete their aims and objectives.
When they formed the group in 2006,their aim was to generate income for fishermen and other stakeholders in their area of jurisdication.Another aim was to initiate additional projects that would increase income to the group and its members in general.Another aim was to give solutions to many isssues affecting locals especially their members. They also wanted to start many groups in different areas along the shoreline like Colorado,Kidongo,Mtwapa na Mwakirunge.
Their last aim was to preserve environment.
The group has also been digging fishing ponds, breeding fish for sale in their neighbouhood. But lack of fund has been their major concern. For example,to construck a full and complte pond costs around 150,000. In this amount,50,000 goes for materials,65,000 going for labour,25,000 for fish seedlings and 10,000 being for security of the pond.According to their chairman,Mzee Kokoto Chivatsi, this is indeed their major challenge and he is asking for donors to come to their rescue.
Currently their efforts which include their monthly contribution have enabled them to construct 5 ponds of which only 3 are usable while others are not yet complete.
80 percent of Kidongo Beach management Unit members are fishermen and their proceeds from fishing is chanelled to the group to meet their daily activities of the group.but lack of fishing gears like fishing boats and nets is a big blow to their efforts in bolstering their trade.Lack of markets for their catch also proves to be majaor huddle in realizing their dreams.for example, they end up loosing cash when bthey fail to sell their catch to hotels. This is again a problem to them.
About the mangrove project, the group aims to plant 100,000 mangrove along the 10 Km stretch from Kidongo to Mwakirunge,Mbuyuni and Colorado. But they are asking for other stakeholders to come to their rescue as this is the only way they can archive their goals.
As I left the site,ti was clear thet thwe villagers are determined to make sure they challenge the poverty that has been the talk of this area. However deteremination they are,one thing was very clear, funding is the only way that can bring hope to these locals.
